Deni Fuller is a storyteller who paints with the past to inspire the future. A second-generation Mexican-American artist, Deni traces her creative roots back to her great-grandfather of the Yaqui tribe in Mexico. Growing up under the golden California sun, she learned that the land and our ancestors are always speaking to us—we only need to listen.
However, Deni noticed a silence on the library shelves of her childhood. While there were plenty of stories about European princesses, there were few that celebrated Indigenous voices. She created Bobok Brings the Rain! to fill that gap. Deni wanted to give children a window into the Yaqui spirit, offering an invitation to celebrate a culture that has been here for centuries yet is often missing from storybooks. This isn't just an animal story; it is an act of cultural preservation.
With a Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University and over 25 years as an art educator, Deni knows how to ignite a child’s imagination. To honor the story's roots, she utilized the traditional art of linoleum cut printing. Each illustration was lovingly hand-carved, inked, and pressed—a slow, deliberate process that echoes the ancient craftsmanship of her heritage.
Deni believes that, like the hero of her story, every child possesses a powerful voice. She creates art to remind us that even the smallest spirit can summon the rain.
